“Olivia! Child! Give me that!”
Olivia veered at her mother as she pulled her decapitated doll away from her. She liked her dolly without a head. It was a great comfort to her. It was only yesterday her cute face looked at her but somehow, she found great comfort in pulling the head out of its socket. A great peace over came her once she did it. Now she wished it on her Mother. She wished her dead. She hated her. Her dolly… She’s an ugly person, she thought. Her mother? Yes. Such were Olivia’s thoughts.
The noise outside the village distracted Olivia from her dark thoughts. She ran to the window wiping the tears from her eyes and her Mother’s voice fading in the background.
“Such destruction child! Sometimes I think the devil has got a hold of you. You’re a devil child.”
Olivia ignored the ugly thoughts of her mother’s fears. She focused on the young man running mad through her village.
“You shall all be sorry for this! The lot of you!” The young man shouted creating such a stir. Olivia became intensely curious. Her blue eyes widened as she witnessed a dark figure on a black horse holding a sharp-edged weapon quickly approaching the center market. The young man looking to the sky uttering something in Latin. Just like the priests in town, she thought. They came to warn of a darkness, an apocalypse. The young man spread out his hands to the sky and closed his eyes. The horseman raised his weapon, Olivia’s mouth salivating at the scene. The horse man swung only once. and the young man’s head flew up in the air, blood splattered over his kneeling body. The gasps heard all around echoed pleasure in Olivia’s heart. She was suddenly feeling rather energized by what she had just witnessed. She swallowed a few times before her Mother pulled her away from the window.
“We should leave this place!”
Olivia’s parents were frightened. The village was under the protection of the Italian, Salvatore. He was a very powerful creature. Once they were under attack from French forces. He offered their village protection if they satisfied his wishes. That is… a virgin would visit his castle every fort night. That is all he required. They were never to be seen again of course but no one questioned it. The protection had lasted for years. Now, there was something stirring. The dark horseman circled the young man’s decapitated body as blood continued to gush out. He took his head stabbing it with his weapon. He held it high for all to see. Olivia squeezed her head between her parents. Her eyes hungry for the sight. Olivia’s heart began to race. Such a curious child. Blood, gore… she loved it so.
“You listen loud and clear! Your Master Salvatore is disappointed! You have weakened your affections toward his benevolence! This is a what is to become of you, if another transgression against him is discovered! He is watching! He is all knowing! There shall be no escaping his wrath!”
The village gasped. Hearts racing echoed in the market. Olivia only smiled. Salvatore. Her thoughts delighted in him. Curious child at six years of age with such dark yearning thoughts.
